Alison McKinnon – Complementary Therapist

Alison McKinnon is a highly experienced complementary therapist for animals and people. She set up her consultancy, The Holistic Pet to offer natural therapies such as acupressure, essential oil therapy, massage, photo (light) therapy, reiki and zoopharmacognosy, and to coach pet parents and animal guardians in creating as natural a lifestyle as possible, often improving their own health in the process.

She believes that by learning to incorporate species appropriate activities, diet and lifestyle enrichment including therapies, that far from widening the gap between us, will deepen our bond with the animals we share our lives with. Alison is consulted by people both in the UK and abroad on issues ranging from skin problems, age related issues and behavioural problems through to end of life care. She is a board member of The Shelter Animal Reiki Association (SARA) an organisation whose mission it is to bring Reiki and self-care to animals and their guardians in rescue facilities, and travels extensively to teach their methods. She holds workshops and retreats in the UK, India and Egypt, working with all types of animals, but admits to a particular soft spot for the street dogs of India.

Dogs have evolved over thousands of years to live in partnership with humans but our increasingly toxic environment and lack of choice in the lifestyle that we impose on our dogs impacts on their mental and physical wellbeing. Alison promises that by looking at your dog as an individual you will be rewarded by taking your relationship to a whole new level, of mutual respect.

Dogs ‘see’ with their nose and our modern environment effectively ‘blinds’ them, adding further to the stress of living in a human world. We can harness this super sense, via the behavioural science of Zoopharmacognosy, the self-selection of natural compounds and aromatic plants, to bring about healing and balance.

Alison has spent many years studying the use of herbal and essential oils from the traditions of Indian Ayurveda and Chinese Traditional Medicine. And advises on how this knowledge can be applied to canine care at every stage of your dog’s life, enhancing mind, body and spirit. * (under veterinary supervision)

Jo-Rosie Haffenden – Animal Behaviourist

Jo-Rosie Haffenden is an animal behaviourist, TV animal trainer and head of behaviour for TheSchool of Canine Science. She is an accredited expert witness for dangerous dog cases, an author, The Real Dog Yoga teacher as well as star of ITV hit series Teach My Pet.

Having studied and observed canines all over the world including a trip to India to research the behaviours of village dogs and their social behaviours. Jo soon became interested in the legal side of dog ownership and decided to move from the Animal Hospital to gain further experience in working with illegal breeds by assisting some of this countries then leading legal experts until she herself was able to become an approved expert witness.

Jo invented The Real Dog Yoga as a permission-based protocol to help dogs stretch when they are post-op or injured and also for its amazing calming effects on dogs who suffer with hyperactive or particularly impulsive behaviours. Formally the Head of Behaviour for the Institute of Modern Dog Trainers, Jo-Rosie left this position to start up her own education provider with fellow trainer Nando. They now run The School of Canine Science which is a world leading course provider – taking training and behaviour to a new level across the UK, Europe and the rest of the world.  Jo lives in England with her partner Nando Brown and their young son as well as their five dogs, including Archie the super pit, Ella the Viszla, Zues the Doberman and two Malinois Fizz and Blake.
